A Freight Conductor's primary responsibility is to safely coordinate train crews on a freight train, place rail cars to facilitate loading and unloading, and makeup/breakdown trains in a rail yard, customer facility, or similar locations. Specific duties include: review instructions from yardmasters, dispatchers, and other transportation employees; communicate effectively with engineers, customers, and other railroad personnel; ensure trains operate safely and on time in compliance with railroad operating rules and FRA regulations; perform switching operations to assemble and disassemble trains; verify train makeup documents and freight manifests; conduct pre-departure safety checks. Requirements: high school diploma or GED; must be 18 years or older; valid driver's license; physically able to perform the duties of the position including outdoor work in all weather conditions, climbing, and lifting; must be able to pass a medical examination, drug and alcohol screen, and background check (including hair and urine collection). CSX provides 5 weeks of paid training including hotel room and lunch on class days. New hire conductors are eligible for retention bonuses upon completion of first and second year of service. CSX does not accept Medical Marijuana cards in lieu of drug testing compliance.
